Amish Friendship Bread: Day 5
Posted by michelle on December 6, 2004 05:25 PM

I was discussing the bread starter with a friend the other day and he asked what the difference was between the Amish Friendship Bread starter and a sourdough bread starter. And, you know, I don't think there is much of one. This starter is milk-based (instead of water, which I believe is what is used in a normal sourdough starter, I could be wrong), but the concept is the same.

I'll end up with 4+ cups of starter by day 10, so perhaps I will see what happens when trying to make a loaf of bread with one, in addition to using one cup for the friendship bread. I don't think giving away two cups of starter instead of three will invoke any chain-letteresque curse. I hope not, anyway.

Today, my frothy starter continues to smell like beer and sits on my counter, still undisturbed by kitties. Tomorrow is when the action begins! Well, sortof.
